Finding My Purpose as a Young Woman

I'm sure we’ve all heard the saying or have said, “I’m trying to find my purpose” or “What was I created to do?” This is something that a lot of us constantly reflect on. We know that there’s more to us than where we are. But seriously, what is our purpose? I know I’ve asked myself that.

Standing in the grass with a purse in my hand and other hand on my hair.

Sometimes as young women, we struggle with knowing what our purpose is. Our purpose is to glorify God. But how do we do this? This is done through our gifts (Romans 12: 6-8). We all have different ways of drawing people to God. We use the gifts He’s given us. Our gifts can be writing, mentorship, dancing, acting, and the list goes on! Our job is to figure out what our own gifts are. I always knew I was called to greater than my current circumstances. I always knew people needed to hear my voice. I just didn't know how to get it out…until now.

Let me tell you a brief story about how I discovered my gifts. I got to a point to where I wanted to know even more about me and what sets me apart. So, I had to really think about what I was good at. It wasn’t until undergrad 2018 that I realized I had a gift of writing after writing enough papers. In 2021, I worked as a digital marketing analyst doing SEO. In 2022, I discovered my gift of encouragement at church. 2025 is when God put it on my heart to start a blog. He was molding me to prepare me for this moment. He’s so intentional. Between those years, I did exhortations at church and a lot of writing in grad school. These were two things I enjoyed. I didn’t know that a few years later, I would be starting a blog using both gifts (writing and encouragement).

If you’re struggling with discovering your gifts. Here are a few guided tips that helped me:

  • Prayer: Prayer is essential when trying to find your gifts. Since God is the one who gives them, consistently asking Him to reveal them to you is important. Remember, it’s already in you. You just need to ask for revelation. Often, God will also give you the big picture and not the details so that you’ll trust Him along the way. For example, God gave Joseph a prophetic dream about his bright future. But He didn’t emphasize the steps he’d have to take to get there. (Genesis 37:5) Also, meditating on scripture that emphasize discovering your gifts is important.

  • Jot down ideas: Writing down your thoughts and ideas of creativity can help put things into perspective. Often, we try and keep it all in our heads. Writing down what God reveals to you is essential to organize those thoughts.

  • Get Insight: Sometimes, God will speak to you through other people to confirm things to you. These are things He’s already told you. That's what He did to me. But, it’s important to make sure that those people have your best interest at heart. You should be very discerning of who’s giving you insight.

  • Take Action:  Now it’s time to take action. Often, trying new things and stepping into new territory is key in discovering your gifts. Growth is done in the uncomfortable. You begin to realize new things about yourself. As you’re stepping into that unfamiliar territory, it stretches you into more. This is the process of unlocking new levels of who you are.

You may be in this season right now. You might even feel stuck. But you don't have to be, and you never really are. I know, easier said than done. But it’s possible. Reflect on what you’re good at. It may be drawing, creating music, empathizing with others, or even building things. These are all gifts. It’s essential to enjoy what you do while on earth because that is the gift of God (Ecclesiastes 5:19). As you’re on this road of discovery, remember to reflect on your interests. We need your gifts. You can help so many people that are waiting on you. You're so important to the kingdom!
